Ordering shoes online is easy when you know your size and stressful when you do not. The good news is that a ruler, a pencil and a sheet of paper are all you need to measure your foot at home. This guide shows the method and gives an approximate conversion between EU, US and UK sizes.

Quick answer: stand on a sheet of paper with your heel at a wall, mark your longest toe, measure in centimetres and add 0.5 to 1 cm. Then match the number to the chart below.

What you will need

  • A sheet of paper larger than your foot.
  • A pencil or pen.
  • A ruler or tape measure in centimetres.
  • A flat floor and a wall.

Step by step

  1. Measure in the late afternoon or evening, when feet are at their largest.
  2. Place the paper on a hard floor with one edge against the wall.
  3. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your weight evenly distributed.
  4. Mark the tip of your longest toe. It is not always the big toe.
  5. Measure from the paper edge to the mark. This is your foot length.
  6. Repeat with the other foot. Most people have one foot slightly larger, so use the larger measurement.

For width, mark the widest part of your forefoot on the paper and measure straight across. If your foot is wide, consider the roomier size and see our guide to flats for wide feet.

Add a little room

The measurement is your foot, not the inside of the shoe. Shoes need some extra space so your toes can move. Add roughly 0.5 to 1 cm to your foot length when choosing the size, then compare with the size chart. If the result falls between sizes, think about the larger one, especially for styles without adjustable fastenings.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Measuring in the morning, when feet are smaller.
  • Letting the pencil lean inward, which makes the outline too small. Hold it straight.
  • Measuring only one foot.
  • Relying on the size of your old shoes, which may be worn, stretched or the wrong fit.

Check the fit when it arrives

Try your pair on indoors. You should be able to wiggle your toes, your heel should stay in place, and nothing should pinch. If something feels off, compare your measurement again before wearing them outside. For more detail on avoiding returns, read our guide to finding your flat shoe size.

Keep a record

Once you have your measurements, write them down or save a photo of the paper outline. Note the length and width of both feet, the date, and the size you chose from each brand's chart. Next time you shop online, you will not need to measure again, and you will quickly see if your numbers have changed. Feet can alter over time, so repeat the process every year or two, and after pregnancy, a change in activity or a long period of weight change.

Order with confidence

Once you have your measurement, pick your size and browse the styles. Shipping is a flat $3.99 worldwide, free when you order 2 pairs, and you have 30 days to exchange or return.

Frequently asked questions

What if I am between two sizes?

Think about the larger size, especially for slip-on styles. Straps and adjustable styles can give you more flexibility.

Are EU, US and UK sizes exactly the same across brands?

No. Conversion tables are approximate, so use the brand's own size chart whenever you can.

Should I measure both feet?

Yes. Many people have one slightly larger foot. Choose the size based on the larger one.
