What to Look for in Comfortable Everyday Flats
A practical checklist for choosing flats you will actually want to wear all day: fit, sole, closure, materials and how to break them in.
The best flat is the one you reach for again and again. Comfort comes from a handful of details, and most of them you can check before you buy. Here is a checklist you can use with any pair, from any brand.
1. The right size, first
Nothing else matters if the size is off. Measure your foot and compare it to the size guide for the specific style (see our sizing guide). There should be a little room at your toes and no slipping at the heel.
2. A sole that bends with your foot
Hold the shoe at the toe and heel and gently flex it. A sole that bends easily where your foot bends feels more natural to walk in than a stiff one. Look at the product details to see how a style describes its sole.
3. Some cushioning inside
A flat has less built-in support than a trainer, so a cushioned insole helps over a full day. If a style has a thin insole and you walk a lot, you can add a thin removable insole of your own.
4. A secure way to stay on your foot
Flats tend to rub when your heel slips. Straps, buckles and elastic can all help hold the shoe in place, and they let you adjust the fit as your feet change through the day.
5. A breathable upper
Mesh and woven uppers let air move through the shoe, which can feel more comfortable in warm weather. Solid uppers hold their shape and feel more structured.
6. Smooth insides
Run a finger around the inside of the shoe. Seams, trims or stitching that feel rough to the touch are likely to be felt on your foot too.
Breaking in a new pair
- Wear them at home for short periods first.
- Wear socks or tights for the first few outings if a spot feels tight.
- Do not plan a long walk in a brand-new pair. Build up gradually.
- If a pair hurts badly or rubs a blister in the first wear, do not push through — check the fit and size.
